You know the importance of reading, but you just can’t concentrate on the book that you’ve picked for reading? You just read a few pages or chapters from the book then you get distracted and stop reading?
You then turn over towards your computer, television or mobile phones for entertainment.
If you are among the many people who are victims of what I’ve mentioned above, read on, as here are the 7 steps to develop a habit of reading:
1. Set Time for It
In order to develop a reading habit, the first step is to set time for it. It doesn’t matter whether you are depressed, tired of work, busy or feeling sleepy, make sure to dedicate some time for reading.
It will not only relax your mind and will remove your fatigue, it will also make you punctual in your routine life and develop the ability of time management. Even if you only dedicate 15 minutes a day to book reading, it would be a great step to initiate. 15 minutes a day is 5,475 minutes or 91 hours a year. Imagine how much you’ve evolved from reading that 91 more hours a year.
2. Do it Everywhere
It doesn’t matter whether you are waiting for a bus, traveling, going to bed, sitting on the commode, feeling sleepless or you have some spare time, whatever the situation is; carrying a book with you and reading a few pages would be a great way to develop your reading habit. This step will gradually boost the reading habit and also help to pass your time.
“Before this generation loses the wisdom, one advice – read books.”
3. Reduce the Time for Watching TV and Using the Internet
If you think it is difficult to find time for book reading, you need to reduce your time spent on television, the internet, and social media sites. This step will automatically help you save time for reading books and to develop a reading habit. It will be difficult for some people at the start but every minute you save will help you to boost your reading habit.
4. Find a Quiet Place
Finding a quiet place where you can sit on a comfortable chair, plays an important role in order to develop a reading habit. Keep in mind, there should be no such thing as a computer, mobile television, music or noise etc that will distract your interactions towards reading. If you do not have a quiet place to step up the reading habit, create it.
5. Read Fun and Interesting Books at the Start
If you are a beginner and am uninterested towards reading, you need to start from fun books. They could be novels or books that grab your attention and keep you going. Start from there before you move towards the possibly drier and more boring self-help and self-development books.
6. Read to your Friends or Kids
You can also boost your reading habit by sharing some information or interesting chapters with your friends. Also, if you have children at home, you can read short stories to them. Thus, take a step to find some interesting children’s book and spend some time with them and you will be developing reading habit in you as well as in your children.
7. Blog About It
Blogging is one of the best ways to develop a reading habit. If you don’t have a blog, create it. It’s free to create a blog. Then, ask your friends and family to go there and give you suggestions. It will help you boost your interest in that topic and engage yourself more by blogging it.
